The search for young murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod through the forests of Northern Manitoba in the summer of 2019 captivated the country and drew worldwide attention. The RCMP chased the shadowy teens from crime scenes in the mountains of British Columbia to Bird, Manitoba – a tiny First Nations community near Gillam.

As the police released tidbits of information to an anxious public, a local trapper from Fox Lake Cree Nation worked behind the scenes. He would have an impact on the search that no one could imagine.

After reporting on the initial news story, The Globe and Mail returned one month after the search ended to hear the full story from the people who lived through it all. See the original story from September 2019 about Billy Beardy and the end of the RCMP search here: https://tgam.ca/3knFGXT
